Fact and folklore interwoven with personal encounters and ruminations. I got hooked on page 9 and just had to know if she would kiss Michael's saffron-coated lips again (she didn't). The book has two souls, historical and familial, and I wonder whether it would have been better as two books. Expensive, but well written with over 20 recipes. Hard back.

As always, reading River Cafe cookbooks makes me want to go into the kitchen and cook. I think it's a combination of great ingredients that you can still identify in the photographs once the dishes are cooked. The mat photography makes the food look very real and appealing. This collection of around 170 recipes, is aimed at those starting off with Italian cooking, or anyone wanting a speedy meal. I want to make flattened chicken, any one of the 24 bruschetta and the glorious stuffed pumpkin overflowing with crispy potatoes, pancetta and tiny chillies, and, and Yumptious scrumptious food. Hard cover.

Flicking through I found at least twenty things I want to make in this book - that's a good sign, but then again, I'm a Jaffrey fan. The book is close to A4 in size with lots of colour pics. Just be careful that you don't already have a copy (first printed 1982). If you have collected Indian cookbooks for awhile, you just may have it over 750,000 copies have been sold. Hard cover.

Not new (published 1999) and not entirely vegetarian (but nearly) this book rates a mention because it's a great collection of beautifully presented and photographed food. A feast for the imagination. Hard cover.
